J. Paul's News from the Field

Dear Friends,

Last November I had the pleasure of hosting the McGee family from North Carolina.  The eldest McGee son Matt,  wrote a paper for his schools writing class.  The subject was what he did over Thanksgiving break.  Matt’s father David forwarded a copy of the paper to me.  I think you will find it interesting to read about a 15 year old's hunting experience at PA-KO Plantation.  Photos of Matt’s buck and that of his brother Josh can be found on the trophy slideshow section of our media gallery.

Good Hunting!

Over Thanksgiving break my dad decided to take me and my brother hunting in Alabama.  We were going to a place called PA-KO.  The man who owns it is named J. Paul.  Big bucks get killed there every year.  While hunting in Alabama I saw a lot of deer, ate great food and made new friends.

There are two different types of hunts at PA-KO.  The morning hunt is a great time to watch the big buck off guard while he is walking through the woods.  At Alabama the sun rises at about 6:00 AM so we were getting up at 4:30 A.M. the three days we were there.

I hunted ladder stands every morning but didn’t really see a lot of deer.

The evening is the time to hunt in Alabama.  At PA-KO, all over his food plots are really nice box stands.  In the box stands there are cushioned seats and shelves to put stuff on.  They also block out the wind.  The first evening I hunted a box stand and all I saw were does.  I wasn’t terribly disappointed because I knew I still had two more night hunts.  On the second night I was sitting in a box stand just hanging out.  When I looked up I saw three does had come out into the food plot.  I was planning on shooting one of them but right before I shot another deer ran into the plot.  On this deer I saw a bunch of horns.  I whistled at him to make him stop the shot.  I was shaking like a leaf and got out of the stand to go look for blood.  J. Paul decided to wait until morning to get his dog out and go find it.  It took the dog about three minutes to find that buck.  It was a really nice nine point.

I still had two more days until we were leaving so I decided to hunt for some different things.  You could see coyotes, bob cats, wild boar and just tons of different things to hunt.  While staying at PA-KO there was some awesome food.  Every morning you woke up you would go over to the dining area and eat different things for breakfast.  One morning might be cereal, the next sausage biscuits, even eggs and bacon.  When you come in from the morning hunt they give you about and hour and then serve lunch.   One day for lunch they had cheeseburgers, soup and grilled cheese.  Then you go hunt for the afternoon.  When you come back there is a huge fire for you to relax at before they call you in for dinner.  They have tons of different items for dinner.  One night they had turkey and then the next fried chicken and it’s always delicious.

At PA-KO you make great new friends.  There are two guys that take you around to your hunting spots.  Lester and Horace are two of J. Paul’s employees.  They are two really nice guys who love what they do.  When you kill a deer they are there helping you find it and will even clean it for you.

Then there’s J. Paul who is from Ohio but now lives in Alabama.  He is another really nice guy.  He knows where to put you for you to see a deer and he really cares about you killing a big buck.  There were some other people hunting that we met.  Scott was a guy from Montgomery.  He knew a lot of interesting things about interesting stuff.  Then there was Jim, his wife and daughter.  He was from Florida and really loved to hunt.  His daughter got her first deer this year with a crossbow.  PA-KO was overall just a great trip.
